Op 25 januari verschijnt het nieuwe album van het Schotse rocktrio Biffy Clyro. Het album met de titel Opposites is het zesde studioalbum van de band en is geproduceerd door Garth Richardson die eerder al meewerkte aan hun albums Puzzle (2007) en Only Revolutions (2009). Opposites verschijnt in twee configuraties, namelijk als 1CD en 2CD/DVD. De eerste single van het album is de track Black Chandelier.
Op 18 februari is Biffy Clyro in Nederland voor een concert in een uitverkochte Melkweg in Amsterdam. Eind november stond de band al in de bovenzaal van de Paradiso om een handjevol fans alvast een voorproefje te geven van het album. Dit concert is opgenomen door 3voor12 en zal eind deze maand worden uitgezonden:

De weg naar hun zesde studioalbum was geen gemakkelijke. Vlak voordat de band wilde starten met de opnames voor hun nieuwe album werden ze overmeesterd door de alcoholverslaving van Ben Johnston. “I’d written all of these songs about us ending up in a situation I couldn’t believe we’d ended up in,” vertelt frontman Simon Neil. “Then one day we decided that we couldn’t let something as silly as drink get in the way of something we’d spent our life doing. We weren’t willing to let this take hold of our journey.” Disc 1 van het album, getiteld The Sand At The Core Of Our Bones, vertelt het verhaal achter deze donkere periode met songteksten als “It could’ve been a wonderful year / Instead we might not make it to the end” (Biblical) en “The fog has cast a shadow homeward / We’re losing our direction so forget the whole thing” (The Fog).
Gelukkig zag Ben ook in dat hij iets aan zijn alcoholverslaving moest gaan doen. Zijn herstel hiervan en de daaropvolgende optredens die de band heeft gegeven, heeft de band voorzien van nieuwe energie. Disc 2 van het album – The Land At The End Of Our Toes – focust zich weer op een mooie toekomst voor de band met positieve songteksten als “If we hold on, there’s a victory over the sun” (Victory Over The Sun) en “Feeling alive with a throbbing mind, you’re never gonna break my stand” (Skylight). Met een glimlach vertelt bassist James Johnston: “Our history shone through and our love for each other brought us back together. If we were a different band we could’ve said fuck this, let’s go home. Because we care about each other, we managed to bring it back together to be stronger than what we were before. When you go through difficult times you can go one of two ways, and thankfully we went up.”

Biffy Clyro werd in 1995 opgericht in Kilmarnock, in de buurt van Glasgow, Schotland. De band bestaat uit de drie jeugdvrienden Simon Neil (zang/gitaar), James Johnston (bas) en James zijn tweelingbroer Ben Johnston (drums). Met hun vierde album Puzzle, dat in eigen land meer dan 150 duizend exemplaren verkocht en op #2 binnen kwam, trok het succes aan en speelde de band in Wembley als support voor Muse en als afsluiter op de John Peel stage van Glastonbury. Vandaag de dag heeft Biffy Clyro meer dan een miljoen albums verkocht en hebben ze o.a. twee NME awards op zak voor “Best Music Video” (The Captain) en “Best Live Band”.
